CHAPTER TWELVE

Charlie

What a weekend. A weird but brilliant weekend. Hmmm. Lizzie. She’s nowhere near as horrible as she first seemed. She's sweet and lovely and funny. She's just going through crap. Aren't we all? But yeah, she's cool and very pretty too. She's so petite, I guess the male hormones in me want to protect her. She opened up, showing her vulnerability about losing her dad. I bet that was an enormous deal for her. I'm thinking about her way too much. The high from the fun we had this weekend still running through my veins. She was great. Too great.

I see Liam heading towards the bus stop. Wow, actually early for once and no Rosie.

"Hey Liam, where's the old ball and chain today?" I ask, looking behind him.

He laughs, "She's gone in early to help with year eight tutoring or something, her mum took her. Too early for me to get up and for some reason, they don't want me tutoring."

I nod slowly, "Yeah... weird, right?"

Liam isn't the most academic of us bus lot, in fact, before Rosie, school was lucky that he turned up at all, but she's really calmed him down, he isn't in half as much trouble as he used to be.

Hmmm, I wonder if, while he's on his own, I could ask him for advice on Beth and Lizzie. Could be that Beth is trying to push me away, the thing is, I would forget about her altogether if it wasn't so perfect at Comic Con and we hadn't gotten on so brilliantly. I know I wasn't imagining it, I know she was as into me that I was with her and that we clicked. So why is she being so off with me now? And then there is Lizzie, who makes my heart beat a bit faster when I think about her, but she is my future step-sister and no way could I go there, still, she's pretty gorgeous without even trying, but does she have feelings for me? we nearly kissed on Saturday night, if our parents hadn’t interrupted us, we would have. Would she have regretted it? Women. I will never understand them.

"Liam, could I get some advice from you?"

He frowns. "Okay, I'm not really an expert at much, what’s up?"

"Well, it's about a girl, well two, actually," I say, quietly.

"What? You’re always moaning you want a girlfriend and now there's two on the scene?"

I huff. "Not exactly, no. Right, so girl number one. She seemed really into me the first day we met, I mean like really into me. We proper got on. Never felt anything like it." Jesus, am I really talking to him about this? "Anyway, since that day, it's like she doesn't want to talk to me."

"Hmmm, she's not got a boyfriend, has she?"

“No, she would have said."

He shrugs. "You never know."

I pick up my phone and start to message her.

"What are you doing?"

I shrug. "I'm asking her."

He nods. "Just see if she answers straight away or leaves it a bit as though she's thinking of her answer.
